Sorry - Church closed until Easter (or later?) owing to the Coronavirus.
17th March 2020
To all our friends at Horwich Evangelical Church:
I am writing on behalf of the Elders to let you know how we plan to respond to the latest statements from the government regarding the Coronavirus outbreak.
The Elders met last evening, and in the light of official recommendations which were being updated even as we met, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend all regular church activities, including Sunday services, at least until after Easter. We took this decision with much regret, because our times of fellowship are very precious to all of us, but we felt that it was the correct decision given the official guidance we are receiving at the moment.
However, we would like to stress 2 points:
1) We are committed to maintaining our pastoral support for every member of the fellowship at this difficult time when we will all miss the encouragement of meeting together at church. As Elders we aim to keep in contact with everyone in the church, either by phone or email, and we also encourage you to keep in touch with us, especially if you have needs for prayer or practical help. We will regularly circulate items for prayer and encouragement, so that we can continue to support each other by our prayers. We will continue to meet to review the situation, and we will keep you up-to-date as our plans develop.
2) Psalm 46 says:
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress
These words are as true today as they were many centuries ago when they were written. God is still the same almighty God. He is still in control of our situation. He still loves us. He is still our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear. He will bring us through, to his glory.
Let’s keep reminding ourselves of these wonderful truths in these difficult days, and follow his instruction at the end of the Psalm: “Be still, and know that I am God”.
God bless you all,
Eric, on behalf of all the Elders (Bob, Eric, Mike, Ray & Shaun)
